Lincoln Cathedral from 15 Hall Drive Lincoln County History 1949-1999 At a meeting held at the Mason Arms Hotel, Lincoln, on January 1st 1949 attended by 15 bowlers and one press representative it was agreed to form a Bowling Association under the English Bowling Association Rules and Constitution and Laws of the Game. The meeting was convened by Mr.Fred Brown a Federation County Bowler. The first President elected was Mr. William E. Young of Branston B.C. who, at this time, was also the President of Lincolnshire Bowling Federation. Mr Tom Brown, brother of Fred, was elected Secretary/Treasurer. Tom ( a School Teacher) was eventually to bring honour to Lincolnshire by being elected President of the English Bowling Association in 1965. In the next fifty years the County Association continued to develop from the initial 9 Founder Clubs to 90 Clubs in the early nineties all of whom are also Federation Clubs. The County maintains a regular membership of approximately 2500. Many of the Lincolnshire Clubs were founded by Heavy Industry in the Lincoln, Grantham, and Scunthorpe areas - Appleby Frodingham, Rose Forgrove , Ruston Bucyrus, Robeys, Clayton Forge, Aveling Barford, and British Sugar. All these Clubs now struggle for survival due to restructuring and takeovers, with the inevitable closure of some. In the inaugural year the County entered the National Championships and Middleton Cup but with little success in that year. In 1966 the County founded a Vice Presidents' Association with membership reaching almost 400 in 1992. The Vice Presidents' Association make a significant monetary contribution to the Parent Association each year, and they also provide a stepping-stone to County President on many occasions through their Chairmanship.
Over the years the County has achieved many successes by winning the Middleton Cup in 1976 and 1996, also Runners Up in 1974 and 1988. Success has also come the County's way in the Top Four and Under 25s Double Rink Championship.
The County has also made a great contribution by providing Senior and Junior Internationals, and players for Test Matches, and Representative Games.
Our fine City and County, with it's magnificent Cathedral provides many touring sides with enjoyable bowling and hospitality, and probably the cheapest bowling in England.
Lincolnshire has played a very important role in the Midland Counties Bowling Association by providing seven Presidents of that Association all of whom were characters in their own right.
The County having celebrated their Golden Jubilee in 1999 continue to serve the National Association by providing Executive members to follow those who have served so well in the past.
2009 we celebrate our Diamond Jubilee when we welcome the Bowls England. President - Dennis Cousins -as our guest along with his specially selected side. Arrangements are in hand to make this milestone a memorable occasion.
